Beyond Borders: Embracing Humanity in our Diversity

In considering the state of our world, I’ve been particularly perplexed by the challenges faced in finding connection in what’s meant to be a modern and interconnected society.

Is technology bettering us?

Vibrant urban spaces are made to globalize and bring us together, through convenience and accessibility. Yet, it's so common to feel alone in a big city. As we ride out of the pandemic, Zoom culture has changed the way we work and interact. In a way, these shifts have made us more connected and yet paradoxically disconnected than ever. I’m seeing a rising desire for community and genuine interconnectedness, and it totally makes sense!

With social media so often pushing us to choose sides and argue, it seems that our differences are magnified. Instead of seeking common ground, we find ourselves looking for feuds and disagreements. It's time to turn off the megaphone, step away from the noise, and rediscover the beauty of human connection–in what we share.

Embracing our shared humanity

Despite varied appearances, celebrations, customs, and cuisines, we are all fundamentally human. We breathe the same air and I believe we have more in common than in difference. Shifting our focus from what divides us and recognizing our commonalities can stand to unite us or at least treat each other with more kindness and human decency.

I remember my trip to China in 2019: Amidst the cultural richness and diversity, what struck me the most was the observation that we are all just people. The same lives and bodies with very few differences. I wish the whole world could experience that!

"The best education you can get is a passport.”

Traveling has been a transformative experience for me, breaking down preconceived notions and fostering a deep appreciation for the diversity and humanity that exists among us. People have asked me if I am scared to travel, but scared of what? I want to experience something new.  I believe the majority of people are good and we are all just trying our best to navigate life's journey.

In a world rife with division, I know there is compassion and unity. I’d love to share this belief with my children; that the world becomes a richer place when we embrace diversity AND all the things we have in common.

Here's to kindness, shared humanity, and the simple act of connecting with our neighbors.
